HOCKEY
PROSPECTS FOR THE SEASON. On Saturday the hockey season opens on Karori Paik, and as tho game has participated in the general uncertainty of things occasioned by the war, a marshalling up of the forces and a roll-call (iu the literal sense) would be welcomed bv players and prospective players of the game. The decision of the Wellington Hookey Association in- only running two grades (senior and junior) will unquestionably be approved of by all hockey players. Then the prospects of the coming season appear promising enough under the circumstances, ~ considering the number of last year's players who have answered the country's call in Egypt, Samoa, the forts, and elsewhere. It is expected that there will be at least six senior teams in' the Saturday competition, and four in the Wednesday competition. The St. Augustine's Club is to be congratulated on entering a team in the senior grade. This club has always produced a very consistent junior cloven, and tho keenness they have been showing at practice the last three weeks will undoubtedly have to be reckoned with by the older teams._ Present indications, however, point to United having tho strongest team on paper in the Saturday competition, and Hcreawa (who, by the way, appear to have creatcd a monopoly of disbanded club players) in the Wednesday fixtures. Notable absentees this season will be: R. Thompson and L. Boyd (United), Keys, Legge, and Taplin (Metropolitan), Carl ana • George Strack (University). Morpeth, Hall, Griffiths, and Reed (Wellington), and Cameron and Surgenor (Insurance).
