MIRACULOUS ESCAPE
MOTOR-CAB FALLS OFF A BRIDGE. (By Telegraph— Special Correspondent.! Napier,. April 18. A serious motor-car accident occurred at Clive about 10 o'clock this morning, when a hugo 40-h.p. car, driven by a young man named Leonard Wood, and containing two other .young fellows, Lewis Wood and Sidney Stacpool, in trying ,to . avoid. a mob .of cattle, dashed through the heavy beams at one side of the approach to the Clive bridge, and fell with the occupants on to the river-bed, some 15 or 20 feet below. The car cut through the beams as .though they were of matchwood, remained suspended by the rear wheels for a brief instant, and then fell, striking the soft- muddy earth beneath, nose on, and turning completely over, imprisoning two of biie occupants, the Brothers Wood, beneath it. Several spectators witnessed the accident, and quickly righted the car, expecting to. see the mangled remains of the passengers. Fortunately two of them escaped, lightly sustaining nothing worse than a shock, scratches, etc. Stacpool, however, wa6 very severely cut about, having one very deep .gash in his head. He is progressing- favourably. The car was not greatly damaged. Mr. ■ Sam Wood, woolbroker, is tho owner of the car, the repairs to which will probably cost £10 or £15. The engine was in running order after the accident, which is considered the most miraculous affair of its kind that has ever occurred in the district.
