The secretary of the Wednesday HalfHoliday Defence League in Wellington has received the following letter from the secretary of the Ohristchurch Thursday Half-Holiday Movement:—"l sincerely trust Wellington will bo success-' ful. in retaining the Wednesday lialfholiday for shops, both in the interests of the Tetailers themselves «Wid the chopping public. After two years' trial in Christcliurch, it is quite evident that the Saturday half-holiday is not the success that its promoters predicted, and a large number of our electors are bound to show their dissatisfaction ■when the poll is taken. The large shopkeopers are, of course, not so keenlv affected, but the meaium and small shops have been hit very hard and the majority of them are firmly convinced that'the adoption of Saturday is detrimental to the commercial progress of the City. The main grievance, of course, lies in the fact that fully half the shops are exempted from the compulsory clause, and almcst without exception take advantage by remaining open on Saturday. So the position develops into two late nights a week, one half remaining open on Friday and the other on Saturday, thoroughly disorganising the shopping public and utterly destroying the cohesion of the retail trade. My executive feels conrinced that if Saturday were an absolute closo day the public would quickly recognise all its inconveniences, and' soon ask for the return of the mid-week holiday and' Saturday trading."
