TRENTHAM RACES
CONCLUDING DAY WARSTEP WINS GOLD CUP MUMMER'S AUTUMN HANDICAP Fins weather was experienced on Saturday for the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, and the attendance at Trentham was very large. Members of the Ministry present, were the Hons. A. L. Herdman (Attorney-General), W. Eraser (Minister of Public Works), and W. H. Herries (Minister - of Railways), and there were also present Dr. Newman, M.P., Mr. G. Hunter, M.P., Mr. E. H. Hiley, General • Manager of Railways, and prominent sporting men of both islands. Interesting races were witnessed, the principal events, the Gold Cup and Autumn Handicap, being the chief attraction. In_ the latter' Mummer got home, and paid his supporters a good figure, while the Gold Cup favourite, Warstep, further enhanced her reputation by carrying most of the money on .the machine to a victory. After the event the Hon. W. H. Herries presented the handsome gold cup to the trainer of Warstep; Mr. G. M. Aynsley, in the unavoidable absence of the owner, Mr. C. G. Dalgety. In doing so, Mr. Herries said that WaTstep was the best mare in New Zealand; there was nothing to beat her, and she belonged to a good sport. Last year, he added, the Cup went to the North Island, and it was only right that it should now go to the South Island. He congratulated the Racing Club on being able to put up an event which could draw such a fine lot of horses. Warstep got a great reception on returning to the paddock". Betting wa6 keen throughout the day, no less a sum than .£44,420 10s. being put through the machine, as against .£30,454 for the corresponding day last year, making a total for the meeting of -£73,009 10s„ as compared with *658,236 10s. for the meeting last year.

Time, lmin. 13 2-ssec. ! NOTES ON THE RACING
The Pole and Agatha Green had a duel for favouritism in the Second Hack Steeples, and the latter just scored by a few tickets. She did not get well away, and was in the rear for a round, when she rau into second place, but her jumping was very faulty, and was losing her a lot of ground. Grey Renown, a perfect jumper, had a big lead nearly all the way, but over the last half-mile he tired and The Pole, finishing strongly, beat him in Ihe run home. Nita jumped her rider off, at the first fence, and Captain Pliiut did the same at the logs the second time. The Hutt Handicap was a good betting race, several of the runners coming in for strong support. Banksia carried over four figures, but once again she failed. Belasco took charge at the barrier rise and led the whole way, though he had to be kicled right out to beat Bene, who was badly placed over the early part of the race, Kaminohe ran a good race throughout, but Banian was disappointing. Allen Doqne was prominent for six furlongs, when he faded out of it. Mount Victoria gave a lot of bother at the barrier. and had to give the field a twolengths start when the tapes were released.
The whole of the acceptors went to the post for the Muritai Handicap, which was a very keen betting race. Haumakaka was a strong favourite, then came Montana, Combustion, and Blackall nearly as well backed. From a perfect start the colours of Montana on the fence were the first to become prominent, but at the end of a furlong Submersion and His Eminence were showing clear of Rongora, whiie Montana had beea sent back. At the half-mile Sylvan Dale moved up, but the leaders named were still in charge at the straight entrance. Here Haumakaka and Combustion came through, and finishing full of running the first-named won easily from Sylvan Dale. Combustion was a fair third, then came. His Eminence and Blackall.
Rinaldo and Multiply carried the bulk of the investments in tho big race, and backers of the former were unlucky not to collect, but Multiply ran badly, and was never dangerous. The favourite drew an outside position at tho barrier, and gat a bad run round the top turn. He made up his ground in good style, but was carried off the course entering the straight, and did well to finish within a neck of the winner. linmer made the running from Coldstream, Mummer and Castalia till the straight was reached. He and Mummer shot out, and from the distance a. fine struggle was witnessed between tho leaders. Mummer won by a head from Goldstream, wiltli the same margin separating Rinaldo, Immer, and Castalia.
Eligible was a few pounds better favourite than Hyginas in the Pacific Handicap, while over a thousand pounds were invested on. Taringamutu. After allowing the light-weights to lead into ithe straight, Eligible then came fast on the outside, and won comfortably from Hyginas, who struggled on well in second place. Taringamutu was a poor third, then came Privation and Depredation, who had made the early running.
In the birdcage before tho Gold Cup was run nothing looked better than Warstep, who seems to have done well 6ince landing here. No fault could be found with the condition of Ladoga or Merry Roe, while Pavlova appeared to bo much benefited by her race 011 the opening day. The favourite and Merry Roe were not given preliminaries, but the others moved down-well. Wurstop carried just under three thousand pounds on t'io machine, which is a record investment for Trentliain. Al the start the favourite look charge, and was in front practically throughout. Merry Hoe headed her for two furlongs round the top bend, but ihe rest nl the tussiM. KM the
Martian mare. At the half-mils Indigo was on her quarters, but entering the straight she shook him off, and in the run home easily -withstood a challenge from Balboa, who subsequently filled second place. Indigo was three lengths away third, then came Pavlova and Ladoga, with Merry Hoe beaten off. The winner got the greatest reception ever accorded a horse at Trentham, and the cheers were renewed when the timo was hoisted, and it was seen that an Australasian record had been run. The winner won nicely, but, being a free-going mare, it is probable that she was doing her best when the post was reached. Croesus was favourite in. the Suburban Handicap. Evidently backers were supporting Deeley, who lias not been, beaten on the Boyal Fusilier gelding. He duly won, but had nothing to spare at the finish, while it looked as if Chakwana was unlucky not to score, as she did not get out till well down tho straight, and was then only a neck away. Avon Park was prominent at the distance, but failed to finish on. Tete-a-tete was fourth, just in front of Chudic.
The favourite Client scored in the last race after the finest finish of the meeting. _ When the judge's box was reached Client, Maltegarde, Botanist, and Dinner Gong were in a line, and no one could say which horse had won. Thefavourite got a bad run, and would have been unlucky to have missed the verdict,' but Dinner Gong also met with a bad check two furlongs fijom home. The early running was made by Maltegarde and Otter, but the latter stopped badly in the straight. Captain Glossop looked to be going well at tha straight entrance, where he got carried out wide. Tirana, who was greatly fancied by his connections, failed badly. WINNINB JOCKEYS. Winning jockeys at the meeting were:— B. Deeley, three wins; H. Young, two wins; and H. M'Sweeney, J. Buchanan, S. Eeid, J. O'Shea, W. Adams, A. Keid, Eoy Eeed, H. Thompson, C. Stowe, L. Wilson, and C. Emerson, one each. ,
