An exchange 6tates that with a view to securing the release of cargo in the interned German vosels at Java, Mr. Caleb Allen, manager ot Port Adelaide for Messrs. Harris, Scarfe, Ltd., is leaving S.vduey on Saturday next-. It is stated that Mr. Allen's trip is being made on behalf of between 7CO and 800 consignees in Australia. and Hew Zealand. The total weight of the careo Is 17,000 tons, and It is valued nt over £200,000. Should shipowners refuse to release the cargo, application is to be made to the ■ Courts of Java. Mr. J. T. Martin recently returned to Wellington from a mission to Java in connection with the interned carco, and reported that there were many hindrances placed in the way of securing the cargo: He strongly recommended to the Chamber of Commerce that the matter should be left in the hands of the Rotterdam Trading Company, who should be furnished with, necessary bills of lading, power of attorney, and other >,documents with full instructions. The chamber undertook to arrange this. Mr. Martin also stated that the cargo was found to 'be in excellent condition on the German ships. In fact, he had never seen better stowage. The ex-Hansa liner Birkenfels, which has been detained at Cane Town, and which was subsequently allowed to proceed to Australian ports, has arrived at Adelafde to discharge cargo. Before leaving for southern ports to-day the Union Company's Tarawem will land 300 tons of northern cargo at this port.
