POPE'S DESIRE FOR PEACE
OFFER TO CO-OPERATE WITH UNITED STATES Washington, Ajiril 13. President 'Wilson guardedly, informed the Press callers" at White House that the Pope had offered to co-operate with the United States with the object of securing a European peace, and to .work with the peace delegates now in session at The Hague.' However, this was unofficial. Mr. Wilson refused to nay what the prospects of peace were. (Rec. April 14, 10.35 p.m.) Washington, April 13'. President 'Wilson states that he has received no formal communications from the Po])e regarding peace negotiations. There is no truth, he says, in the statement that the United States was aware, officially or unofficially, of any terms of peace that might be made. FRANCE AND THE VATICAN. EX-MINISTER'S VISIT TO THE POPS. Rome, April 13. A feeling exists that the visit of M. Hanotaux, French ex : Minister for Foreign Affairs, to Italy is to oppn negotia. tions with the object of 'arranging an understanding between France and the Holy See. This is considered to be necessary owing to the Russian successes; The Vatican hopes through France to bring pressure to bear on Russia with regard to the treatment of Polish Roman Catholics. Another question attracting the attention of the Holy See is the rumour that Russia will not rest satisfied with Constantinople, but will claim possession of the Holy Land.
