A BLESSING IN DISGUISE
WAR A GOOD THING FOR RUSSIAN PEASANTS. (Rec. April 14, 8.15 p.m.) Petrogirad, April 14. The Russian Minister of Finance has, informed the Press Agency that the war is proving a blessing to the people of Russia. The peasants now have Better prospects of living in comparative comfort, as owing to the allowance made to the families of soldiers, their incomes are greater than in times of peace. The prohibition of vodka is primarily responsible for the ameliorated conditions of the peasants. Before the war the average yearly savings on deposit totalled between 15 and 20 million dollars (?), ivhilg in January alone 30 million dollars wero deposited in the banks. [The reference to dollars is obscure. Tho principal coin in Russia is the rouble (2s. ljd.), which, is the standard basis for the official statistics.]
