PUBLIC LIBRARY
' Sir,—l am writing for some information, if you will kindly give it. V\hy in tli© Empire City should the ladies department of the Public Library never have a copy of the evening P a P® r > whereas it is a regular feature of the men's department ? It is considered sufficient in .the way of mental food for the ladies' department to have- a copy of the "New Zealand Times." Should there bo any difference, from a municipal standpoint, of sex —are not all equal? ''It seems curious that we are deemed worthy of a vote and yet not capable of comprehending anything higher than the wisdom of the. "New Zealand Times." A reply to the above will greatly oblige.—l am, etc., fa . ' PUZZLED. [The above matter was referred to tho Chief Librarian (Mr. H. Baillie), who stated that there is no "men's department" in the Public Library. The reading roomß are open to any sober person. There is a small section of ono of the reference rooms, where, for the convenience of ladies, a number of magazines of interest to them are filed. At present only one newspaper is filed. Others have beon removed owing to the mutilation they suffer.]
