KARORI AFFAIRS
The ordinary meeting of the Karori Borough Council was held last night. The, Mayor (Mr. W. T. Hildrcth) presided. and there were present: Councillors B. 6. fl. Burn, L. P. Davies, A. Hamilton, P. Jordan, J. M. Henderson, T. R. Boyes, and W. Skegg. A letter was received from tho Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke), requesting the co-operation of the borough to raise a required quota of £978 per month for tlie province for the Belgium Relief Fund, and enclosing a Government circular with regard to tho matter. The Mayor of Wellington suggested that the Central Committee to be set up to carry out the desired end should consist of the Mayor of Wellington, the Hon. C. J. Johnston, Belgian Consul, aild Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K-O. , ... The council decided to assist in the project, and to write, agreeing to the proposed committee. Mr. Hildreth said that he thought the Central Committee would send out suggestions for working, aud would probably call meetings in the various suburbs. It was decided to reply to a letter from the City Council stating that the necessary steps would have to be taken to hold tho poll on the half-holiday question at the coming elections. The Town Clerk: It is one of the rotteneat proposals ever conceived, to have fire polls on one day. The Mayor: That is generally conceded. The Finance Committee 'recommended that the Mayor should renew the £2600 tramway deposit with the Union Bank for two years, and to deposit a further sum of £1500, balance of tramway revenue and accumulated interest. —The proposal was agreed to. It was decided to accept the price of Mr. Wells, 3s. lid. each, ' for streot name plates. The engineer's annual report for the financial year showed that street improvement and maintenance in the borough had cost £1131, and tho cost of metal for streets came to £197. During tho year twenty-two building permits were issued, comprising eleven, dwellings, five additions, two garages, and four sheds, to cost £7008 10s. The building industry was busy up te August, when it fell off. Two thousand eight hundred and seventy-one trucks of metal were crushed during the year, producing 2612 cubic yards of metal, in addition to 1000 odd yards of screenings. The total profit was £39, the small profit'being due to tho cost, 2s. 6d. per cubic yard, at which metal was provided for the streets. Councillor Henderson, ill moving that the report should be received, said that i the streets were a credit to the borough. The Mayor snid that he was very pleased with the report. Tho amount of work done at the cost was very good indeed, and reflected credit on tho engineer. Tho report was adopted.
