EIGHT DAYS' BATTLE ENDED
THE WAR IN THE CARPATHIANS AUSTRIAN ARMY COMMUNICATIONS IN PERIL London, April 13, 3.30 a.m. The High! Commissioner reports:— Petrograd reports: "In the Carpathians, in the direction of Rostok, on Saturday, the Russians repulsed by fire at short range repeated attacks by great forces of the enemy.' "The Russians have progressed, and a violent battle has developed in the region of the Qszok Pass, which the enemy still holds. The Russians took 700 prisoners and three guns. "In the direction of Stryj the enemy's attacks were repulsed, and enormous losses inflicted." WITHIN THREE DATS' MARCH OF THE PLAINS. (Rec. April 13, 7.45 p.m.) Paris, April 13. The. "Temps" says that an eighty days' battle in the Carpathians has ended, and the Russians are advancing along an eighty-mile front, within three days' march of the Hungarian Plains. The enemy's resistance is extremely stubborn, especially where the Hungarians are defending the heights, but the daily loss is enormous, and the reinforcements are not sufficient. Tie armies of Generals Boiervitch and Bemerroli find that their communications have been imperilled by the Russians between Stropko and Smolnik, and Smolnik and Volossate, and that they must retreat. The Fourth Army (of the Aroh-Duke Joseph Ferdinand), which is north of the Carpathians, ana General Lintzinger's, before Kozilova, are imperilled, and must bring their fronts into line with that held by General Boierovitch. RUSSIAN LEFT FLANK THREATENED. (Reo. April 13, 11.50 p.m.) Petrograd, April 13. The Austrian Amy, largely reinforced, at Stryj, is threatening the Russian left rank, thereby assisting their attack on the Rostok-Uzsok front.
