MORE SEA FIGHT RUMOURS

A CIRCUMSTANTIAL STORY

BIG ATLANTIC LINER TORPEDOED

BRITISH STEAMER ATTACKED BY AEROPLANES

BIG BATTLE IN TIE ' CARPATHIANS

RUSSIAN LEFT FLANK THREATENED

To-day's war news conveys more rumours of the sea fight off th» Norwegian coast, but" the veil of mystery still shrouds the scene of the supposed engagement. The London newspapers express the opinion that the sound of target practice at sea has probably given rise to the rumours. The German submarine pirates have had a, busy time, • and amongst their latest exploits is the disablement of i big liner, which is now being towed to Queenstown. A nice exhibition of German "kultur" is given in the insulting behaviour of a submarine commander on board a French vessel. Two air pirates attacked a British steamer, but failed to hit the vessel, whose captain, using a rifle, kept on board for exploding drifting mines, kept the airmen from flying low. Thj Western theatre has been the scene of two very desperate, but absolutely futile, attacks by the Germans on the French line at Beausejour (east of the Argonne), and along the Aisne (in the Albert region). The French line held, and the enemy's losses were appalling. The feeling of British Generals is that the enemy's front can be pierced at any time now, but it is all- a question of munitions, for the enemy must be pounded, and the pounding process must be kept up. _ In the Eastern theatre the Russians' progress has been maintained, and the Hungarian plains are within .three days' march. The latest news is that the Austrians, reinforced, have • made a heavy attack on the Russians' left flank. Pro-war demonstrations are reported from Italy. Count Bernstorff's latest memorandum has evoked a storm of indignation in the United States, and one New York journal heads its article on the subject: "Bernstorff Must Go!"
