ROWING

WEBB V. HANNAN. By this morning's mail Mr. P. Hannan is forwarding to Mr. F. Webb-Jones, editor of .the ' Wauganui "Herald," a bank draft for £100, a half-stake deposit for a sculling race for the professional championship of Now Zealand with Wm. Webb, ex-champion sculler of the world, on the Wanganui River, lhis match has hung fire for a few weeks, but Hannau'6 big deposit looks like business, and if Webb has any intention of rowing professionally again the ohanco is here It is being suggested to Webb that arrangements might be made for the race to take place on the Wanganui River on JAnpire Day (June 3), which will be a close holiday. Webb has declined an offer of £50 expeuses_ to row Arnst on the Parramatta River for a stake, and there is "nothing doing" in regard to Charles Towns's challenge. Still, the ex-cham-pion is said to be rowing with all his old pace and skill, and all Wanganui would like to see him in-action once more. So far, Hannan is an untried man. but ho is young and ambitious, and has friends with confidence in him as an oarsman, and many interested in him sufficiently to make a trip to Wanganui, should the match be arranged. Ho has been training on the Wairau River at Grovetown for a week or two past, but is now visiting Wellington. Bii.yi.L'm. l . I■ ■ 'H ~. , i
