RUGBY
A GAME FOR THE SOLDIERS. A match was played at the Athletic Park on Saturday between au Oriental fifteen and a team representing the Field Artillery at Trentham Camp. The soldiers were a good lot of material individually, and with perhaps two or three exceptions were also a good lot of footballers. Also they were in very fair condition. The even character of the game may be judged from the fact that in the first spell there was no' score. In the second the Trentham men scored three points by a penalty goal, kicked by Gunner Button. It was quite 20 minutes later before Murray equalised matters by kicking a goal for Oriental. It.appeared as if the game must end in a draw, but just on the call of time Murray struggled over the line and grounded the ball near the 'posts. Algar kicked a goal, and the game ended : Oriental, 8; Artillery, 3. The ganift was strenuous enough, as occasional scars to bo observed on players as they walked off proved cleariy,_ but it was played in a thoroughly friendly spirit. OPENING GAMES ELSEWHERE. (By Teleemph.—Press Association 1 Christohurch, April 10. Various Rugby football clubs played practice matches to-day. There were very fair attendances of players at most of the grounds. The playing areas were exceptionally hard and fiery after the dry spell, and strenuous football was out of the question, but some good flashes of play were witnessed. .
