JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondents.) NAPIER. Considerable difficulty is being experienced in Napier in getting Territorials to attend drills regularly, and no fewer than 20 defaulters will appear before tho Magistrate to-day to explain their absence. Among the passenger' from Hastings by tho mail train on Saturday morning were; Mr. E, S. Luttrell, for Christchurch; Mr. C. B. Morison, K.C., for Wellington; Mr: and' Mrs. T. Quinlivan, for Wellington; Mr., Mrs., and Miss Fitzroy, for Wellington; Mr. C. A. Loughnan, for, Palraerston North. Mr. G. M'Millau has resigned his position, as Napier manager of Messrs. Sargood, Son, and Eweu, and intends starting business at Auckland on hia own account. The Hawke'st Bay County. Gun Club ia purchasing a piece of land near Hastings on which club buildings, etc., mil be erected. • The annual balance-sheet of the Havelook North Town Board shows a dobit against loan account of £1191 106. lid., and a, credit to the general account of £491 6s. Id. Tho new Town Board offices cost £623. Successful experiments have recently been made with the tar from the Napier power house gas producers, and it is anticipated that the roads in the town will be considerably improved by its use.
GREYTOWN. 'A farewell Bocial was tendered the Rot. A. Hopper in the Foresters' Hall on Thursday night. Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, M.P., occupied the chair, and spoke of the good work the Rev. Mr. Hopper had done while in Grey town. The obairman presented Mr. Hopper with a purse of sovereigns. During the evening solos, duets, etc., were given by the Misses Barr, Bright, Kiknartin, Bish, Walker, and Hawke, and Mr. Dewar and the Rev. Mr. M'Bean. Mr. C. G. Bouzaid also screened a picture of British Tommies at the front. CARTERTON. On Wednesday evening the first of a series of monthly dances given by the Natives in the large meeting house, "Aotea-roa," at Papawai, was keld a when 126 couples were present. The interior of tho hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion with an abundance of flags and evergreens, and the floor was in splendid order for dancing. The M.C.'s were Messrs. T. Enoka and Tamahau Kingi, and the musio was supplied by the M'Kenzie Orchestra. Supper was provided by a ladies' committee,, under the supervision of. Mrs. Asher. The dances are to bo held every month during the winter. Apologies for absonco were received from tho Premier, the member for the district, Sir James Carroll, and several other Native representatives.' Tho proceeds are to be devoted towards the Bolgian Relief Funds.
