At a meeting of the Board of Directors of tho Bank of New Zealand, held yesterday,, Mr. Harold Beauchamp was re-elected chairman for the current financial year. Mr. G. N. Stnrtevant, of the Lands and Survey Department, has been appointed head of the photo-lithographic branch of the Government Printing Offico, in place of Mr. D. Ross, who recently retired. ' Mt. Elwood Mead, C.E., chairman of the Victorian State Rivers and' Water Supply. Commission, sinco 1907, and recognised, ss one of the loading irrigation engineers in the world, has resigned, as he is accepting the post of chairman .of the United States Irrigation and Reclamation Commissionf— •Piess Association. • .. The Rev.' H. Van Staveren has been nominated as a candidate for a seat on the 'Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. This is tho only nomination received so far. Private - advice received from Egypt states that Captain W. Hardham, V.C., formerly a well-known Petone Rugby player, has been promoted to the rank of major. Major Hardham up to 1911 was an active member of the Petone Club,_ being captain of the senior team for eight years prior to his retirement from active membership. Dr: Fitcliett, C.M.G., and Mrs. Fitchett have gone to Auckland. Major S. H.. Grant, of the New.Zealand Staff Corps, is now in camp at Trenthani, and is leaving with the 4th Reinforcements. Dr. J. Graham Gow has been appointed medical officer at 'Denniston. Mr. John Baillie, the London art dealer, who brought out a fine collection of paintings by English artiste, to the Auckland Exhibition, to find that as far as any appreciation of the works was concerned, art was a dead letter in the northern city, has decided to settle in New Zealand. Mr. Baillie cannot see any promise in the -immediate future for art dealers owing to the drain on the public's purse through tho war, and as his health has been extremely bad he has decided to turn his attention te horticulture and plant-culture probably in the Hutt Valley, which .work will provide him with an open-air life and congenial employment. Since he was last in Wellington, Mr. Baillie has undergone, three operations in New Plymouth, for an internal complaint, and though he is still under the doctor's ..care he is feeling bettor than 'lie has done for years past. The Hutt air, he hopes, will do the rest. Commissioner and Mrs. Hodder, of the Salvation Army, .return to town to-day from a tour in the South Island.
The officers of the Lands and Survey Department have presented a hall barometer, suitably inscribed, to Mr. J. R. Strachan, District Surveyor, who was recently promoted to Nelson.
Dr. L. B. Stringer, son of Judge Stringer, of Christchurch, who is now with the. West Kent Yeomanry ;at Maidstone, in Kent, was for some time in one of the base hospitals in France.
Mr. Robert Bislop, who for the past three years has been, general manager of the Auckland branch of the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., has been transferred to London as manager for the United Kingdom.
Mr. C. B. E. Douglas, of New Plymouth, who for the last few years has been in the United States, and latterly in Mexico, where lie practised as a mining. engineer, has been given a second lieutenancy in the North Staffordshire. Regiment.
An old settler of the Masterton district in the person of Mrs. Samuel AVickenden, died at her residonco at Homebusli, on Thursday, at the age of seventy years. „
Major A. M. Samuel has gone into camp at Levin to take charge of the Sixth Regiment.
Mr. J. R. Reed, K.C., of Auckland, has been visiting Wellington.
The Rev. J Crawford, of Shannon, who is leaving for Paraparaumu, has been presented with a handsome dressing case as a farewell token' of the esteem of the congregation.
After 42 years' continuous service in the Postal Department, Mr..J. P- Vause is to retire at the end of June next. Mr. Vause has been in charge of the Elliott Street (Auckland) branch office for many years, and he actually terminated his service last month, the Department giving him three months' leave ol absence. For 22 years ho was at Te Awamutu.
