"SPOILS TO THE VICTORS"

TRADE UNION PREFERENCE IN PUBLIC WORKS. (Rec. April 8, 8.10 p.m.) Hobart, April 8. A deputation from the Labour Council asked the Premier (Mr. Earle) to grant preference to unionists in all public works. The secretary of the Labourers' Union said that he believed in the principle of spoils to the victors. Trade unionists had worked hard to put the Labour Government in power, and should receive its reward The Premier replied that he abominated the idea, of spoils to the victors. If that was what the deputation wanted they had better remove him from office at once. Preference to unionists was-a legislative, not an executive, act. If a majority of the eleotors ftndorsed the principle of preference they could obtain it through legislation.
