LABOUR'S APPEAL TO CAPITAL
NORTON GRIFFITHS SCHEME IN NEW SOUTH WALES MR. HOLMAN DEFENDS THE CONTRACT (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Sydney, April 7. The Labojir Conference discussed two' censure motions referring to the Norton Griffiths scheme—one proposing that no member of the Labour Party supporting the scheme should be eligible for the next election; the other that the schemo is in contravention of the planks of the Labour platform, is uiisound, and should not be adopted. ! Various speakers passed strictures on the Government. Mr. Holman, the Premier, replying, explained that the «Norton Griffiths cchemo was the only alternative to the cessation.of public works. The scheme was a departure from the Labour platform, but it was equally the duty of the Government to keep the people in. omployment. Mr. W. M. Hughes said he did .not understand the scheme: he thought it a step backwards. Did the Labour Party; come into existence to call on capital in its hour of need, give up its platform ideal for four million pounds for three to five months, and undo all it had striven for for years by hiring capitalists to take the place of the State in the omployment of labour? The precedent was one the Commonwealth would notemulate. He was sure Mr. Holman had striven to promote the best interests of the workers. Both motions were lost.
