BULLET-SHIELDS AT THE FRONT. Telegraphing from the • North of Trance the special correspondent of the "Daily Chronicle" says:— In one of the attacks which they recently delivered on the Yser—a ficrht which an eye-witness states lasted 30 hours, with- alternations of calm and renewed spasms of energy—the Germans made use of an enormous shield, such as the Carthagenians employed in attacking Russian forts, and a description of which we read in Flaubert'.s "Salammbo." These shields are a huge. mass of concave steel plate, capable of protecting four men. Of these four men two earrv the shield, one on the Tight, the other oil the left, and the third, armed with a rifle, uses it through an opening specially madr> in the front of the ■shield.
