"The Germans had dug caverns at considerable depth, and at the time of tha attack they were at the bottom of the excavation. The concnssion of the projectiles extinguished the lamp, and tha men were plunged into darkness and made prisoners, while the soldiers in the trenches wero blotted out by the artillery."
