ILLEGAL BETTING
SEVERE FINES IN AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auokland, April 7. In the Police Court, William Ryan, charged with betting on licensed premises, admitted the offence. He was described by the police as a big bettor, whose character was good and who always met his liabilities. He had never been before the Court previously for a breach of tho Act. _ Counsel for the defendant said his client had been to the races and had a drink or two, otherwise tho offence would never have occurred. The Magistrate said he did not think under these circumstances that it would be proper to impose a fine of £100, but differentiation must be made between the small and the big man. Defendant would'be fined £50 and costs. James Lye, a contractor, who had been previously fined £20 for betting, was fined £40 and costs for a further offenco of this nature. Alfred Birch, for betting on Ellerslio racecourse, was fined £30 and costs, and George Powell, for betting on the wharf, was fined £20 and costs.
