CHARLES TOWNS RETIRINC. Now that Charlie Towns has given up all hope of coming to terms with Alf Felton (says the Sydney "Sun") he is seriously considering an early retirement from tho sport. In fact, unless Webb, of New Zealand, agrees to fix up a race'on the Parramatta, Towns will not tako part in another match race. It is to be regretted that he has to go out of the game without being given an opportunity of wiping out his defeat at the hands of Felton and Webb, because neither of those contests were a truo test of the ability of each man. In his present form Towns is showing better sculling than he has dono in the past, and is a match for atfy opponent. The action of Felton in demanding a stake of £250 is defended in ono quarter, but the majority of enthusiasts do not agree with him. In asking for suoh an amount Felton wants a greater sum than has yet been rowed for when the Australian championship was at stake. The Chatswood sculler, though ho did not issue a direct challenge to the ex-world's champion, promised him a race for a certain amount, and when Towns could not get the Full sum asked it would have been only sportsmanlike For Felton to have raced for whatever the other man could find, which was about £150. # 'Rio matter has now ended, and with it. probably closes the sculling career of Charlie Towns.
