CHRISTCHURCH AUTUMN MEETING. WARSTEP WINS THE GREAT AUTUMN HANDICAP. FLYING START'S CHALLENGE STAKES. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! Chrlstchurch, April 6. There was fine weather for the second day of tho C.J.C. Autumn Meeting and a good attendance. The totalizator invest* ments for tho day totalled ,£32,950 10s., compared with .£'29,099 for the correspupd-. ing day last year. The total for the meeting was .£70,519 10s., as compared with i£G4,783 10s. for the corresponding meeting last year. Of the quartet which contested the Hurdles Daylight Bill, th« first day's win* ner, was again the public choice, despite a substantial increase in weight. Ho jumped well, but the long run from the five fiirlouga allowed the others to get him, and the lot rose at the last fence together. After that the weight told, and Commotion won nicely from Castiron and Optician, with the top-weight close up. A serious accident was narrowly avert* ed in tho Two-year-old Handicap, in Vi'tiicii there was a lot of jostling and crossing, Ardenvohr and Marc Antony, in particular coming in for a bad time. Down was best supported, but ho went under hy a narrow margin to Xqnfhoa, Bellsliire was close up third, and Mara Antony fourth.

Magdala and Marsa were' the withdraw* als from the Yaldhnrst Welter Handicap. Bonny Bigg was the public choice, but she does not 6eem'to handle weight too well, and after looking to possess a' ohance at the turn 6he stumbled and waa not again dangerous. Fabrikoff and Honesty were the leading division early ia the piece, with Don Francisco tailed off,'' Fabrikoff shook off Honesty in tha straight, but Don Francisco came with a| great rattle, and the bay horse was -rid* den out to win. by a length.and a halfj Twelfth Night was just clear of Peg. Nightwatoh, Bank&ia, and Scotch lleh ody were withdrawn from the big event. The field got away, to a good start, anc( at the first attempt rounding Cutts'a bend Ladoga hung out and lost about four lengths, and the field- was piloted by Gold Soult, with Warstep and form following and Kilrain whipping tM field. Down the back the positions unchanged, but rounding the. bend' War* step ran 'up to the .leader.and wag firs! into the straight Half way down the running Ladoga singled himself out and challenged Warstep, but in a good finish! ,tho top-weight held her own and won by 'a heck. First Glance was two lengths away, and then came Specialform, Mdlj tiply. Court Martial, Gold Soult, Kilrain, and Ogier. The winner was received witli a great outburst of cheering as she re> turned to the scale. The had none the best of matters in the runj ning, and it says little for the remainder of the field when they were so decisively l ; beaten. The first mile took imin. 43sec.,' and the full distance 2min. S3 4-ssec. Tie slow- pace was of course all in favour of the top : weight. Volspiel was a fonr-figure favourite in' the Aadington Handicap, but after looking like a winner for seven furlongs the weight beat him at the end, and he finished out of a place. Art made the running from the favourite, with Maltcgarda handy. Inside the distance Merry Trick came with a rattle and scored by a length! from Art, with Maltegarde the same dis* tanco away. The' combination, Flying Start and Bat* tie Eve, Mas a better favourite than Em. perador in the Challenge Stakes; the other bracket (Sauci and Bonny Dream) being the outsider. Flying Start gave a lot or bother at the barrier, hut eventually got out well. Bonny Dream set a very fast pace, and had a ten-lengths' load across the bottom, where she ran off, and had to be pulled up. This left Battle Eve ia front, hut Emperador soon collared himj and then had to resist a strong challengo from Flying Start. Over the.last furlong the pair were hard at it, and the two-year-old gained the mastery hy a length. Sauci was two lengths away, and Battle Eve was further back;

Croesus again carried the confidence, of the public - in the Templeton Handicap,' but again he failed badly. He got out well, but Daytime was always with him. and Chudio with Clynelish. took a land at the bottom <of the straight. The latter, pair and .Daytime fought out the finish, Clynelish winning by a neck from Day* time, with • Chndic close up. Charmillai and Dinner Gong played up at the barrier and were left. Chortle and Banksia were "the goods'* in the Final Handicap, and the former won, but was a bit lucky in finding an opening on the fence, otherwise he might have been defeated. At the start Marsa and Sootch Melody set a fast pace, but they were in trouble at the distance, where Banksia took charge. Just as she appeared to be winning the favourite got through, and won an exciting race by a length from Magdala, who oame with, a goo<l late run. Banksia wa6 close up an<t Sartorzo was fourth. Before reaching the mile-post Gold Roult. had taken charge, and he showed the way along the back, while just after passing the six furlongpost Ogier drooped back. Gold Soult was done with before they came into the straight, where Warstop. who was always one of the leading division, put in a run on tho rails and established a lead of three lengths.
