BOW THE GOEBEN ESCAPED FROM THE ALLIES
(Reo. April 6, 8,20 p m.)
■ London, April 5. A Vienna newspaper publishes a letter from one of the officers, of the Goeben describing the ex-German battlecruiser s and the cruiser Breslau's escape to Turkish waters at the outbreak P.® sa ys: "When vre found that a British squadron was shepherding us we.asked them what they wanted, and received a reply that war wis threatening to break out between Britain _ and Germany. As we were outnumbered we bolted. All hands, from the officers downward, assisted in the stokehold, and we worked up a speed of thirty knots. _ "That same night we were informed by wireless that war had been declared. Half an hour later we beat off an attack by six torpedo boats, but reached Messina utterly worn out. The French squadron lay in wait. "The Kaiser telegraphed us that he was convinced that we could fight through. We did. Our life-and-death run through thirteen ships and ten destroyers is vouched for by heavily damaged French and British cruisers seeking refuge at Port Said and- Alexandria."
