The farmer, like any other business man, conducts his farm on business principles and produces that which pays him best. Both for his'own pocket and for the good of tho community it is right he should do so. If the Government attempted to do otherwiseand grow wheat at a loss the community would have to pay the loss. To accuse the farmer of unscrupulous greed in obtaining the market price for his grain is as unfair as it would be to accuse the Amalgamated Society of Engineers of _ unscrupulous greed in obtaining the highest wages they can get. Fixing a price, .below the market value would be as disastrous as fixing the price of labour below the rate which the demand for it allows. A fixed maximum for wheat with no compensation to the farmer. for a low price is on a par with a game of heads I -win, tails i you lose, nnd certainly would not encourage the farmer to grow it. I can only recommend that temporary evils should be homo with a little patience, and if things are left to natural laws they will not be long hefore they right themselves.—l am, etc., i W. J. BIRCH.
