BELGIAN PAIRS TOURNEY

THE OPENING PLAY

At 9.30 a.m. yesterday it looked very much as though there would be no bowls for anyone, and with the Wellington Centre's Belgian. Fund Pairs Tournament to play it was thought that tho contest would resolve itself j into two days' play instead of three. The rain which fell in bucketsful for about twenty minutes cleared off at about 10.30 a.m., and though the greens were well soaked and a gale was blowing it was decided to make a start. The decision proved to be a wiso one, for as the day wore on the weather conditions improved gradually until, at about 4 p.m., there was scarcely a breath of wind and the sun was shining genially. There were 4'2 pairs engaged in the tournament, and tfhey were divided into .four sections—three tens and a twelve. The conditions were that all ties in sections and all pairs who won as many games as the lowest section winner should be included in the finals. The results were as follow:— FIRST ROUND. Section D: Brackenridge (Newtown), Dimock (Thorndon), and Horner (Wellington), 3 wins each. Tho only games that were not completed were those played on the Wellington Club's green, where some of tho teams made a late start in the third round. Play was continued until '.the darkness made the jack invisible, and pven then there was some play with tliG aid of lighted matches.
