A JAPANESE STEAM SERVICE
A DIRECT TRADE. (By TeleEraph—Press Association.) Auckland, March 81. _The announcement that the Nippon Yusen Kaisha. had decided to establish » direct line of steamships between Japanese and New Zealand ports is confirmed b.v letters received in Auckland. Advice has also been received that a Japanese steamer, tho JCsama Marti, is now loading carpo at San Francisco for Auckland ana other Dominion ports, and will sail shortly. The steamer is shown by Lloyd's Register as the only vessel owned by tho Yamamoto Ivisen Shokai (Shipping Company) of Osaka, but cahle advices indicate that the vessel is only the first of a new lino entering into competition with the companies now trading between Now Zealand and San Francisco. Efforts arc being made by Japanese manufacturer* to secure the trade in glassware which has previously boon supplied by Helghim, Germany, and Austria. They have already sent sample shipments of their wares, and theso have been very favourable received. They hav© also asked for samples of the glassware required in the Dominion, offering to manufacture goods according to thes« patterns. A desire to meet the exact requirements of merchants Tather than to sell goods designed in accordance with their own ideas seems from the advices received bore to be characteristic of the Japanese.
