Mr. Ross is a man who has touched life at many . points. In his youth he was a fine athlete—a speedy runner, a fine footballer, and a successful cyclist. Later he took up tho strenuous pastime of mountaineering. As a journalist and author, Mr. lioss's merit has been recogr.ised not only in New Zealand, but in Great Britain, America, and. Australia.: For a number of years he has been the special correspondent in Wellington of the "Otago Daily Times" and the Christchurch "Press," and for some fourteen years he acted as New Zealand correspondent of the London "Times." He haß also written for the "Spectator" (London), _ "Harper's Weekly," the "San Ftancisco Examiner,", the ■ "Sydney Daily Telegraph," the Melbourne "Argus," the "Australasian," and the Melbourne "Age." He has on two occasions acted as war correspondent, both times at Samoa. When the last rebellion occurred there he left New Zealand at a moment's notice as a special correspondent for several New Zealand, papers. In the recent expedition to Samoa Sir. Ross's services were accept* ed by the military authorities, and for his assistance-to the occupying force he was mentioned in dispatches. Mr. Ross has also published several books about his native land. Shortly before the outbreak of war he. travelled extensively in Belgium, HoW. land, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Hungary.
