TRAINING COLLEGE
♦ B ANNUAL REPORT THE WORK OF THE FUTURE TEACHERS. Tlte annual report of Mr. J. S. Ten- - nant, principal of the Wellington Train- , ins College, was presented to the Wellington Education Board yesterday. The report states: — "Tho session opened with a roll of 112 students, of whom 60 were secondyear and 52 first-year students. First year, 17 men, 36 women: scjoud your, 10 men, 50 women. Of this total 102 belonged to Division A (that is, had ! been pupil teachers or probationers), ' six to Division B, while four were graduate students. During the year ' five students resigned, two on account ' of ill-health, two to take up teaching positions, and one to leave the profession. "The problem of enforcing the stu- ' dent's bond is au extremely difficult one for the Education Board, and it ' would in every way simplify matters if ! the bond were made one as between the students and the Education De- ; partment. _ 1 "The various districts were represent- ' edas follows: —Wellington, 40; Wanga- ' nui, 25; Hawke's Bay, 20; Taranaki, ' 0; Nelson, 8; Marlborough, 5; Grey, ! 5: Westland, 3. "Taking as a basis the number of pupil teachers and probationers employed, it will be found that quite a reasonable number of student teachers : in the middle district complete their 1 training, as provided by the State. The 1 high percentage, however, is really ' maintained by five of the ei<*hfc dis- 1 trict-s included. In two of them the 1 percentage falls as low as 70. Every year we Tiave applications for admission 1 from young teachers who have, willingly or otherwise, not conformed with the • very clear regulation bearing on that 1 point. (Vide Section 11A of the Train- ; ing College Regulations.) As a consequence the College au'thiorities incur 1 blame which properly belongs to the lo- ' cal education authorities. 1 "I have to express our indebt- • edness to the Women Students' Hos- ! tel and the Friends' Hostel for the groat assistance they render the college in providing good accommodation and general supervision for girls obliged to live away from home. "In a$ 23 students llept first year's • terms, nine second, and four third year's terms; 16 first, 28 second, and 78 third-class passes were gained. One student sat for honours, two for the final, and soven for the first section of, the B.A. degree. , [; "With t'he very large number of sen-' ■ ioy students it was found exceedinglydifficult to provide sufficient teaching practice, and a much larger number of demonstration lessons were given by the senior members of the staff. This in itself was good, but it left comparatively little time to either the headmaster or myself to supervise the ordinary_ teaching work of the students. The visits to associated schools again afforded a very valuable experience to the seniors. "Sixty-two students completed their course of training iu December, and the joint result of the Departmental Examinations and Training College recommendations waswas follows:—Full D Certificate, 26; full C Certificate.-24; full B Certificate, 1; partial D Certificate, 4; partial D Certificate. 20; partiaV B Certificate, 1. "The working of a double institution, ohanges in staff and the unsettling effects of the war have all added their quota of increased responsibilities, and I have again to thank the Board of Advice, the Secretary of the Education Board, Mr. Webb, and the College Staff for their much appreciated assistance in carrying on tli3 important work in which we ara engaged."
