PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
At last evening's meeting of the 'Petone Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors, Forsyth. List, Cox, Brocklebank, Anderson, Findlay, Townsend, Jones, and Truemun. An application for a renewal of a second-hand dealer's license was granted. to (i. Leavey, and permission was given the Mascote Co. to screen suitable pictures on Good Friday. ' The Prime Minister acknowledged receipt of council's letter, intimating that it supported the resolution regarding cost of living, passed by tie.. Itunanga Council, and added that the views of the Petone Council on this matter would receive due consideration. On Councillor Anderson's motion, it was agreed that this council regret 6 that the Prime Minister does not see fit to take any further action. The Social Democratic Party intimated that its Petone branch had carried the following resolution:—"That this branch of'the S.D.P. endorses and supports the proposal to establish a hospital milk supply, and also favours municipal control of town supplies. Discussion of this matter was neld over till the next meeting. The report of the engineer and fire superintendent upon the Lyceum and Empire Halls was discussed, and resome minor matters in connection. with the former to be referred to the fire superintendent. The secretary of the Petone District High School Committee yrote suggesting the establishment of a Petone Borough Public Schools' branch of the Library. . The suggestion was referred to the (Library Committee to report upon, as' tho matter in the opinion of members involved expense. Messrs. Clayton, Sons, and Co., contractors for the council's gasholder, wrote stating that owing to extra unforßeen charges brought about through the war, that they would be unable to proceed with the contract unless •an additional £100, made up by increase in cost of freight, £(5, and war insurance risk at 25 per cent., £25, was agreed to. After some discussion the extra, amount was agreed to. Much discussion ensued over the allocation of football grounds, representatives of the Rugby and League games attending and applying for grounds. Tho Resorvcs Committee reported:— (1) That the Wellington Rugby Union be granted the use of Nos. 1, 2, and 3 grounds on the basis of 60 per cent, to the council and 40 per cent, to the union of the net gate-takings.- (2) That St. David's Association Football Club be granted the use of No. 4 ground on the same terms as last year. (3) That tho Wellington' 1 Football Association be granted the use of a ground over the stopr bank for the sum of £6 for the season. Mr. W. S. Brice, on behalf of tho Wellington llugby League, applied for a ground on the e.amo terms as last year, stating that the local club had four teams playing.- The application was strongly supported by Councillor Anderson. Councillor List moved that tho. recommendation of the committee be adopted, and after a lengthy discussion this was carried.
