Official.—The sappers in a mining gallery ill the Argonne district discovered thnfc the Germans were countermining. The French hurriedly decided to block the gallery with sand bags and explodo tlio chamber immediately. Meanwhile the Germans gave the alarm, and evidently came to a similar decision. They returned and placed explosives in the saps, and a race ensued as to who should finish first. The French won, fired the mine, and the German sappers were hurled into the air a moment later.
