EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE
Interviewed' about tho export of oats yesterday, the Minister .of Customs made the following statement:—With respect to the applications for permission to export goods that are prohibited, the Minister proposes, both for thfi convenience of the applicants- and of the Department; to' give Tuesday in each week as a day on which applications will be considered. Applicants it-re, therefore, requested to send in applications so as to reach Wellington on the'morning of that day. ; _They will then get an answer' that evening, and can make shipping arrangements . for tho week. . The advantage to the' Department will bo that all the applications for the weefc will be considered w one lot. and a,better estimate can be formed of the merits of the applications. Preference will be given to applications for export of goods to the Islands, and next to exports to Australia in connection with His Majesty's military or naval forces. Until further reports are received with' regard to oat statistics it will be impossible to consider applications for export of that cereal unless under exceptional circumstances. Stocks hold of bran in. tho Dominion are under normal, but as bran deteriorates by-keeping, permission Has been given for a limited export, and applications will be- considered week by week. Straw chaff is not prohibited, and can bo exported. without permission, but the Customs must be satisfied that the. grain has been threshed out. Duty on flour and wheat and on Algerian oats for seed purposes only has been suspended till the end of the year. "
