VICTORIA COLLEGE DEBATING SOCIETY
The sixteenth annual general meeting of the above society was held on Wednesday last, Mr. G. G. G. AVatson, presiding over a large attendance of members. The report presented stated that owing to the international situation the society had suffered both in liiembeislvip and interest, and for this reason it was deemed advisable to abandon the annual Phmket Medal competition which is the most important meeting of the year. Up to the outbreak of war, however, the society had a most siiecessful year, and the' public debate on the Labour movement was one of the most successful in the history of the society. Messrs. Watson and Sievwrijrht, the society's representatives at the N.Z. University tournament, succeeded in gaining the Joynt Challenge Scroll. The union prize was won by Mr. L. M. Moss, and the New Speaker's prize was divided, between Messrs. Cunningham and Schmidt. The balance-sheet disclosed a slight deficit due to special expenditure of a non-recurring nature. After a brief and animated discussion, th© report, with one amendment, and the balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers for the year resulted, as follows: —Patron.'His Excellency the Governor; president, Professor Marsden ; chairman, Mr. P. P. Broad, LL.B.; secretary. Mr. .J. P. Pyrne; treasurer, Mr. G. Schmidt; committee, Misses Richmond and Stevens, Messrs. Rogers and George. The society extends a hearty invitation to tl»o public to attend the meetings of the society, and an intimation thereof will he given at an early date.
