Christchurch, March 27. Some very fine work was done this morning. The outside of the course proper was open, and being very fast the times recorded were above the average. Autumnus, after trotting a circuit on th<! plough, was galloped a mile, but did not shape too well. He was carrying a very light weight, and was. losing all the way . Nones gave Xanthos a lot of weight and a good beating over five furlongs. ■ XaJithos is not going as well as he was. Bimeler's performance over six furlongs on the grass was very good He had nothing, to help him, and finished full of running. Scotch Melody was galloped a mile over the plough, and did her work in great 6tyle. The time was good, and the mare finished well. There was very little difference between Battle Eve and Flying Start at tho end of seven furlongs on the courso proper. Baittle Eve showed a little moro pace over the first few furlongs,A six-furlong trial on the course proper between Einperador and Croesus caused much interest. The two were carrying about even weights, and got away to a. flying start, of which Einperador had something like two lengths the best. Croesus was out in front as they turned into the straight, but ran rather wide, and Emperador got on term 6 with him a furlong from home, and from that put had all the best of it. Croesus did not finish at all well. When they pulled up Emperador was much fresher than his opponent, wjip was blowing hard and heaving rather badly.

Nightwatch was rather stiff. He was cantered a round on the plough. Then a lighter weighit was put up, and he was sent ten furlongs on the course proper. Court Martial picked him up over the last three-quarters of a mile, but could not hold him. The time was good, and the big fellow finished very well. After cooling out he was trotted in the middle, and was decidedly sore behind. ■ I am afraid, writes the "Looker On," that it will take his trainer all. his time to keep the Easter and Autumn' candidate on his fcot until the races are over.

Charmilla went seven furlongs on the course with Honesty, and finished in good style. She is coming back to form fast. Honesty was going rather short, and was not in a generous humour.

The "Looker On" in the "News" says Banksia finished very badly in a gallop with Malegarde, to whom she was giving a fair slice of weight. I cajinot like Banksia over twelve furlongs. Medley cannot run out a mile yet. She had Snapdragon • and Don .Francisco in serious-trouble at the end of six and a half furlongs, but when the post was passed they were both in front of her. TVarstep ran out Itcn furlongs in good style, considering 'tho way she was asked to do it. Medallist, who was given about five lengths start, made her run tho first half-mile under 50scc., and then ho waa pulled off, and thero was nothing to (pick the little maro up, so she had to go on alone, and she does not like extending herself under thoso circumstances. She finished strongly, and the time was quite as good as Nightwatch's, who was carrying all of 281b. less than the mare. Down is galloping well. He was not asked to oxtend himself. Chudic and Chortle were to have galloped six furlongs together, but Chudic refused to go to tho post, so Chortle galloped alone, and performed splendidly. In fact, it was the best gallop of tho morning, for ho was carrying over flst., and was never off the bit, while the timo was only a fraction of a second slower than the best sprint of the morning dono under a feather-weight. Owing to Mr. G. Stead having cla'mod Doelpy's services for Bonnv Itigg, TJ. Hatch has been engaged to rido Chortle in tho Easter Handicap.

After refusing to go to I he post with Chortle, Chudic was taken bad; to the sheds, and a hood was put on him, after which he gavo no trouble, and galloped a, sterling six furlongs on the plough, lie waa doing his utmost when he reached the post. Multiply made many friends by the way ho reeled off seven furlongs on tho course proper. r'jii-,T?rit.ia Ew.llojmd a food itsn fiirlon?* ob tlis plouili. The 6vst (urtoiis w0.3

very slow, but the marc ran tho distanco out in good time, and was finishing strongly. Ogier beat Fabrikoff over six furlongs, but had the inside running, and was in receipt of a lot of weight. It was a good gallop on FabrikoiFs part, and ho finished better than usual. fin core and Glenowl are both striding along as well as anything 111 their respective classes. First Glanco had MeHchikoff to assist her over tho final stages of her gallop over a mile, and tho mare was not asked to do her utmost, and finished very well. Petrosus was carrying a lot of weight while galloping five furlongs. The time was only moderate, and I did not liko the way sho finished. Tannhauser was not asked to do bettev than threo-quarter pace work. He is still very much on the big Bide. Sartorzo was galloped on tho plough, which was slower than tho course proper, and his time compared very favourably with the best done, and ho finished well though doing his licst. Ho was assisted by Art over the lost few furlongs. B. Donovan will ride him in the Easter Handicap. Marc Antony is getting plerjty ot fast work, and shows improvement every timo. Horoscope beat The Cornet over a Tew furlongs, but T. don't think The Cornet was asked to do his best.' Kingsltar did not sprint as well as usual. Moddite and Stargazor both beat him ve.ry comfortably Tweflth Night- gave Athenic and Andraea what looked like a. hopeless start over seven furlongs, but caught them before they reuched the distance, and had no difficulty in beating both homo.. Athenic, who has not been up long, shaped well, but Andraea's performance was not good. RANDWICK TRAINING NOTES. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Melbourne, March 27. Bain overnight improved the Randwick training tracks. Tartanus did eight furlongs in lmin. 481 sec., and Carlita a round in 2min. 34sec. Red Signal was not extended over five furlongs, run in lmin. llsec. Sir Alwynton did a round in 2min. 39sec., Merrimax eight furlongs in lmin. 491 sec.. The last named performance was tho best of tho morning. HAWKESBURY HANDICAP. (Kec. March. 2S, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, March 28. The following is tho result of the HAWKESBURY AUTUMN HANDICAP. Qpe mile and three furlongs.— Lochano, 1; Sir Vive, 2; Wishing Cup, 3. Sixteen started. Won by a ihead, with a length between 6econd and third. Time, 2min. lOJsec. TOTALISATOR IN VICTORIA. (Rec. March 28, 3.30 p.m.) Melbourne, March 27. The committee of the Victoria Racing Club urged the Government to introduco the totalisator. Tho Chief Secretary, in Teply, stated that though the Government would not itself introduce a Bill, it would promiso consideration of a private Bill. JOCKEY'S APPEAL ALLOWED, CASE OF ASHLEY REED. (By Telegraph—Fiom a Correspondent.) 1 Nelson, March 28. At the Nelson Jockey Club's recent meeting Af(hley Heed was disqualified by the judicial committee for six months for alleged obvious nulling of the mare Ruination in the Stoke Hack Handicap. Reed appealed against tho disqualification on the grounds that the committee was not legally constituted, six persons voting instead of five as provided under Part 5, Rule 1, Rules of Racing. The district committee has allowed the appeal and notified the secretary of the Nelson Jockey Club to this effect. Some surprise was expressed in sporting circles at tho time at Reed's disqualification, as he was a rider who had hitherto borne an excellent reputation. GREAT EASTER SCRATCHING. (By Telegraph.—l'resa Association.! Christchurch, March. 27. Reval was scratched at 1 p.m. yesterday for tho Great Easter Handioap.
