"QUEEN OF BATTLES"

SIR JOHN FRENCH ON THE VALUE OF INFANTRY. (Rec. March 28, 3.30 p.m.) . ■ London, March 27. 'X correspondent of the New York '"American" has interviewed Sir John French, who stated that the most crucial moment of the war for the British occurred a* Le Chateau, during the retreat from Moils. "The German ambition to annihilate us," he said, "might have been realised if our cavalry had failed to cover the British'flank. There (has been some tendency to esagscrate the importance of artillery, but rifles and machine guns will decido the day— infantry remains the queen of battles. "Without deprecating . the valour of the Germans I think that they are no greater than other soldiers. In many instances tho Germans' conduct has been very bad although it varied, and generally depended upon the character of their commanders. "The French Army at the outset laboured under the shadow of the war of 1870, but has since learned that the Germans are hot invincible."
