"FINEST SET OF MEN I'VE EVER SEEN."

- This extract is from a letter received in Brainhall from an East Lancashire Territorial in Egypt:—"We are in the' old barracks, which some say were built by Napoleon, but. which 1 am inclined to disbelieve, as 1 hardly think lie was hero Jong enough to accomplish this feat. All the same, they are very ancient; stone floors, with big, wide verandahs. In one partrthere is a Church of England Soldiers' Institute, with restaurant, four billiard tables, cosy reading room, avec>padded armchairs, five nutty writing tables, padded lounges, and all tlie latest papers, photographs, ctc., and a large grocery store and canteen, where hot tea, hot'rock buna, ham and eggs, gold fiako cigarettes, etc., can all be had at.reasonablo prices. We have a bookstall with English bookß and papers; the' only thing is you pay 1\ piastres (Is. 7d.) for Is. Nelson editions. "The Australians and New Zealandera aro in camp at , near the Pyramids. Some of them are mad enough for anything, and, honestly speaking, they're'the biggestiand finest, set of men I've ever' seen —broad-shouldered, big-legged,- burly, muscular, bull-like fellows, splendid - shots and horsemen— most of them,, you know, bushmen and cowboys. . If ever they get near to closo quarters with the Germans I'd put all my money without prejudice on our colonials'. It's marvellous what eons of Empire we have."
