DROWNED AT SEA. S.S. WESTMEATH L\ T ROI'GH WEATHER. A wireless message lias been received b/ the local agonts for the If. and S. Line from Captain Warren, of the steamer Westmeath, stating a man had been lost overboard. It was also stated that the vessel had been experiencing very rough weather. Sho left Gisborno at 3.30 a.m. on Tuesday and it was expeoted that arrival would ho made at Waitara at noon to-day. No particulars were given concerning the accident. MAN KILLED AT I'ETONE. As tho 7.25 a.m. workers' train was about to leave the Pctonc railway station for town yesterday, a man named William James Crawford, a blacksmith at Ngahauranga, with his son Harold, went to board the train. The latter succeeded, but his father, who was carrying a bag, slipped on tTie wet step and fell between the carriages, sustaining such terrible injuries from the moving train that deatli was instantaneous. The unfortunate man was carried into tho station, and Dr. Harding was communicated with, but upon nis arrival could only pronounce life extinct. The deceased, who was 44 years of ago, had resided in Petone for about eight years, and was a son-in-law of the late Mr. James Donaldson, head gaoler at.Addington.
