PITITEA WHARF
. . —♦ : WHEN TO PROCEED WITH THE WORK. The question of the construction of •■'the Pipitea. Wharf _ came up again at last evening's meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board, when Mr. H. J. Nathan moved:— "(a) That, having regard to the rapid 'and continuous growth of the trade of ■this port, it is most essential that a contract for the erection of the wharf—to be known as the Pipitea Wharf—should j be let at' the earliest possible date. "(b) That, with a view to providing funds'for the cost of such wharf, a special committee be set up, such committee to report as to ways and moans to the Wharves and Accounts Committee at the next meeting of that committee." I Mr. Nathan said that the undertaking was one' which should be gone on with 'at once, as extra accommodation was Heeded. He contended.that funds for the work could be successfully raised at present. He considered that the work could not be completed in less than four nr five years, by which time accommo-. ido.tion would be still more difficult to obtain. A new wharf would obviate congestion. He put the outside cost at £225,000, on which the annual charges :<vould be £13,500. To meet this cost the Board could increase certain charges. The chairman (Mr. R. Fletcher) said 4hat ships'coming to Wellington got nn excellent service, and he objec'.od to any _ to the contrary.. The motion was seconded by Mr. C. ;' W. Jones,. who_ remarked that .no harm o.foild be done in passing it, as a similar resolution was already on the books of ,the Board. The motion was carried, and the special committee is the chairman, Messrs. J. G. Harkness, C. W. Jones, C. E. Daniell, A. H. Hindmarsh, and H. J. •Nathan.
