SALES AT THE OPERA HOUSE

REALISTS £o4 10s. There was a large audience present at the performance of "Lady Windermere's Fan" at the Grand Opera House last evening, and the sales which took place prior to the rise of the curtain evoked a. great deal of interest. The first article submitted was a 221b. iced cake, surmounted with a lollie gibbet and hangiug figure, which was a miniature effigy of a royal person not very popular in this zone at present. The cake was auctioned by Mr. A. L. Wilson and sold to Mr. D. 0. Miller for £2 10s. Mr. Wilson then sold two very nice water-colours by Mr. Walter Leslie. The first, a view of Mount Cook, was bought severally by the following persons:—Mr. H. A. W. Mackenzie, £•5; Dr. Herbert, £6; Mr. O'Shea, £5; and finally was knocked down to Mr. Westbury for £s—£2l in all. The second painting, a- sketch of, the fleet of transports with the Main Expeditionary Force on board, clearing Wellington Heads, was sold (severally again) to Mr. Scobie Mackenzie, £2; Mr. Osborne, £2; Mr. Barlthrop, £2, and finally to Mrs. J. Mandel, £2—ill all £8. Miss Beatrice Day then sold ■ over again the Belgian flag presented by the scholars of the Roseneath School.' The bids were: Lady Kelburn, £6; Mrs. Moorehouse, £5, and finally "the Syndicate" (Messrs. C. Smith, £5; C.Palliser, £1, and J. Fuller, jun,. £3), £9. The otal for the evening was £54 10s. Hie presence of a largo contingent of the National Reserve was a factor in the success of tho effort. RAILWAYMEN'S BELGIAN NIGHT. The 'first of iite Railwaymen's efforts on behalf of the Belgians sill culminate m a unique entertainment in the Town Hall to-morrow night, under the patronage of Their Excellencies the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool. Tho features of tho evening will doubtless be the jiu-jitsu display by Captain Leopold M'Laglen, the champion of the world, and the exposition of jiu-jitsu bayonet fighting by troops from Trentham camp. This system of bayonet fighting has been invented by Captain M'Laglen, and has been taught by him to British troops in various parts of the world. It is a combination of jiu-jitsu, boxing;, and ordinary bayonet fighting, and gives the soldier who knows it an overwhelming advantage over any adversary who has not been instructed in the art. At the present juncture this exhibition will no doubt keenly interest all those who have relatives mid friends preparing to uphold the honour of the Empire in the great European war.
