HOW THREE CLYDE STEAMERS ESCAPED

A "CORKER' 1 OF A PACE Two Clyde steamers narrowly escaped sharing tho fato of the vessels sunk by the German submarine in tho Irish Sea. They were the Holt liner Atreus and ■Messrs. 'Henderson's steamer Ava, on a voyage from Liverpool to Glasgow. When off Morecambe a submarine, supposed to be a German, was seen between tho two vessels, which wore then several miles apart. A pilot who landed at Greenock from one of the vessels stated that evidently the submarine was so busily engaged with another ship that the Atreus and Ava wero able to proceed unmolested. The crew of the Ava stated that the conning tower of the submarine was visible from tho Ava's deck, and it was noticed that a few men were perched about the tower. Almost simultaneously they saw two rowing boats full of men. Shortly afterwards the Ava passed over a considerable quantity of floating wreckage marking the spot whore a merchant ship had gone down. No name was visible on the wreckage. Perceiving that the men in tho boats were making for the coast, and realising their own danger, the Ava put on full steam.

"Take it from me, matey," said one of the crew, "the pace was a corker, but we got to the Clyde without mishap." —"Manchester Guardian."
