MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THREE MONTHS' FOR THEFT A middle-aged man named Arthur Doughty pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.,' to the theft of an overcoat, a brief bag and contents, to the value of £2 14s. 6d., the property of "John M'Gregor. The theft occurred at the Leviathan Hotel.. Accused had a long list of previous convictions. He was sentenced to imprisonment for three months. A MEAN THEFT. A young man, Sydney Robt. Cross, pleaded guilty to the theft of a gold wristlet watch, valued at £3, the property of John Stanford. Inspector Hendrey said that the offence took place at Auckland. Accused boarded for a timo. with the complainant, and then • absconded without paying, taking with him the watch. He pawned it for 55., redeemed it, and-then said it had been stolen from him. The watch had not been recovered. The Magistrate characterised the offence as a mean one, and fined accused, a first offender, 405., and ordered him to Tepay the value of tha stolen article, in default one month's imprisonment. / OTHER CASES. Joseph Shaw pleaded guilty to assaulting Thos. M'Guire, and to using obscene language; ■ For the assault he was fined 205., and prohibited by consent, and for the obscene language fined £2, or 14 days' imprisonment. Harry Leopold was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment, for committing an indecent act in Upper Willis Street.
John Thomas O'Snllivan was ■ fined 10s., in default 48 hours', for drunkenness, and several first offenders were dealt with in the ordinary way.
