A WOMAN'S DEATH,

An inquest was held yesterday afternoon before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., touching the death of Margaret Agnes Clifford, married woman, 159 Tory Street, who was found drowned in tho i m " ar ' 3oUr . on Saturday night. Allan H. Clifford, husband of tho deceased woman, said that he saw her between 8 and U p.m. on Saturday night. Deceased had been giving way to drink, and then appeared under the influence of liquor. They parted on, friendly terms, and witness had just arranged to set up home again with deceased. She was 43 years of ago. Mrs. Jlary Ward gave evidence that deceased had been, staying with her for a few days prior to her death. On' Saturday afternoon she had 6aid she was going to do away with herself, but witness took no notice of this, as the woman was under the influence of liquor.

Louis Etereuvean, City Council employee, gave_evidence a& to the finding of the body in the Boat Harbour about 11 p.m. on Saturday. After further evidence a verdict was returned that deceased was "found drowned" on the night of March 20.

At about 12.15 p.m. yesterday the step of a tramcar (No. 67) collided with the side of a spring cart belonging to Messrs. S. S. Patterson and Co., grocers, of Tinakori Road, and the driver of the _ cart (Mr. William Patterson) was thrown forward out of his seat, luckily -without sustaining any injury. Both shafts of the cart were snapped off olean about three feet from the body of the vehicle, and a section of the side-step of the car was nicked off. The horse was uninjured. DECK-HAND DROWNED. ■ Auckland, March 23. John Haigh, a deck-hand on the small steamer Kaipatiki, fell between the vessel and the riverhead wharf while releasing a rope, and was drowned. He was a married man, fifty years of age, with a wife and grown-up family.
