RICCARTON TRACK NOTES.

(By Tolesraph— Special Corrasondent.) Christchurch, March 23. 'At Riccarton this morning Battle Eve and Flying Start trotted round to the mile post, and gradually increased their pace from that point until .they were galloping, when they passed the fivcfUTlong peg. Flying Start pulled up better than Battle Eve. The last-named was going a shade better than his stablo-mato ( as they passed ithe post. Merry Guest, who is rapidly improving in condition, was given half-pace work, and moved as well as could be wished. Nones, Emperador, and Xanthos finished in that order at the end of'a solidly run six furlongs in very fair time. Nones was in receipt of a good deal of weight from Emperador, but would only be getting a few pounds from Xanthos, and her effort was decidcdly good. Emperador's gallop was also good, but Xanthos did not show himself in the same-class.

Court Martial had Snapdragon well beaten at the end of a rather good mile. Autumnus trotted off the track quite sound after running a solid mile. Though his leg looks very ugly, and he might break down at any time, he is going sounder than for months.

San Sebastian was going as well as Gowanbrae at the end of a - sprint over a few furlongs. Though Somnambulist was finishing better than usual she had no chance of beating Adjutant in their gallop. Bimeter cantered contentedly to the starting-pest, and then sprinted home Under a nice pull—a useful piece of work. Troon was not worked. She picked up a small nail on Sunday, and her owner is giving her a spell. Reval and Charmilla were given a gallop over a mile. They were not out to make time, but Reval was going better than the maro. Unfortunately Reval pulled up lame, and looked very bad as tie walked off the course. Medallist hit out freely while sprinting a few furlongs down the straight. Don Francisco was to have gone as far as he could in a mile gallop with Nightwatch, but he broke awav on his own, so Nightwatch had to travel alone. He ran the first half-mile very fast. j Slogan, who was given two rounds on the sand at a steady pace, went in a rather stilty fashion in front. Jlaltegarde was easily too good for Camulus over three-quarters of a mile. ' Banksia gallop- over seven furlongs was good. Umeraboy was worked at a strong pace, and pulled up much sounder than he usually does. Scotch Melody galloped well while running a mile with Honesty. Skene Dhu is to he turned out on his owner's staltion for a, long spell, to give him a chance to mature. Warstep was not doing her best while running seven furlongs, and could have knocked several seconds off the time of required. Chrysotis, who was supposed to go with her, could not keep on terms after going a furlong. Petrosus had a big weight up when 6he sprinted slow, and she did not finish at all well. Fabrikoff, who was carrying over 9st., was sprinted fire furlongs from a stand. He is big and lusty, and finished fairly well. ' 1 Maro Antony was ridden out over four furlongs, and finished very true. Tannhauser was only asked to do steady pacing on the sand. " First Glance registered a good performance over seven furlongs.- The time was alirost as good as any gallop over the distance for tho morning, and she was carrying more weight than anything else did. The mare finished strongly and well.

Daylight Bill and Athenic were both goiug well at the end of a mile'and a quarter on the grass. Though Athenic makes a, lot of noise, he seem 6 to stay on fairly ivell. . Sartorze ran the first two furlongs of his gallop much better than usual, and finished as well as ever. The time was not sensational,. but it was a very n:co gallop. Bonny MaMon has undoubted pace, and her gallop over five furlongs up the back was quite as good as anything else did. Free cnce. or twice laitely has galloped very well, and this morning her sprint over four furlongs w'lth Teviotdale was decidedly useful. Samisen showed some of her former brilliancy when Bhe sprinted four furlongs. Down was paid up for the Challenge Stakes, though his name did not appear in the published list.
