fßr Glbncoe.l The Rangitikei Eacing' Club's annual meeting will be held to-morrow and Wednesday. The various races have filled well, and. there'is every prospect of a good day's sport. « Jockey W. Ryan, of Hastings, intended being present at the Masterton meeting, but while on the journey he was taken seriously ill, and Bad fo leave the train at Woodville. At latest advices lie was doing well. Presumably Pavlova is to be seen out in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, for she accompanied the Porirua team to Bulls yesterday, and will be worked on the grass there. Gold Soult, who is to race at Eiccarton. was also sent to Bulls. Moonbria, runner-up in the Club Handicap at Bosehill on Saturday is the ruling fancy for the Sydney Cup, two miles, the distance of which will suit the New Zealander better than the mile and three furlongs over which lie raced on Saturday. The New Zealand horseman, F. W. M'Cabe, who has recently returned to Melbourne, rode Hilkabah, runner up to Chess in the Narong Hurdles, at Caulfield on March 13. The two champion three-year-olds, Mountain KnigM and Carlita, will meet again in the A.J.C. St. Leger on the opening day of the big Eandwick fixture.
It is now recognised that a mistake was made in sending such a number of mares out of England with the Expeditionary Force, and with a view to encouraging and assisting the breeding of light horses, the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries has been authorised by the War Office to arrange for the selection in France and-' f j roturn to England, of mareß which , ;ip longer suitable for use_ with tho L. jiditionary Force, but which appear to tne Board to be suitable for breeding purposes. The mares are to bo kept under the care and observation of the Board for a month after their return from France, and will then bo sold by public auction for breeding purposes, on condition that they arc not at any time to be exported out of the country. To secure observance of this condition, the mares will be branded with a distinctive mark of diamond shape. Tho mnres will be warranted to have passed the mallein test for glanders, and to bfl free at the time of sale from contagious and infectious diseases. In Russia, mares are not allowed to run in races after six years of age, and the best of them are always chosen to be mated with Government stallions. Advices from Riccarton state that Warstep is once more doing phenomenal track work. 0n« morninr- last week, with C.
Emerson in the saddle, she ran ten furlongs in 2min. 9 3-ssec. The Otaki owner-trainer, W. H. Bowden, is taking Hushabye and His Eminence to Bulls to-day, and tho Levin trainer (C. Cannont) also goes to Bulls with Waitomo, Improve, and Tangihou. The Porirua team engaged at the Bulls meeting will consist of Goldstream, Martyress, and Naupata. It was intended to race Eockabye, but she got kickod at Opaki, and will need a spell. Thorp is money to be won in Australia if you get a good three-year-old. Already this season Woorak has won Mountain Knight, .£9(117. Carlita .£8770, Traquctto -£6053, and Blague ,£5935. At the AVallsend meeting on March 10 Lady Boniform (Boniform—Tremor) won tho Town Plate Handicap, one mile and a quarter. Tho winner is owned by tho Sydney sportsman, Mr. R. W. Clancey. Mr. G. E. Currio, of Christchurch, will act as deputy-stipendiary steward at Tauherenikau on April 3 and 5. Mr. W. E. Bidwill, president of the Wairarapa Racing Club, is staying in Wellington for a few dayß. The Hawbra-owned Sir Moseley died on Sunday last from inflammation of the bowels. The bay horso was purchased for 800gns. j ust twelve months ago, but lie proved anything but a profitable speculation for Mr. A. W. Gillies. After a long absence from the racing track, Domino was down for an engagement in the Ohinemuri Cup on Wednesday last (says an Auckland exchange). Before racing started the track was very hard, and Jfr. Ring would not take any risk, and the son of Freedom was withdrawn.
