FOOD PRICES IN BERLIN

BOARD OF TRADE IIGURES. The "Board of Trade labour Gasette," issued on January 16, contained interesting information concerning food prices in Berlin in November. Priccs were 20.9 per cent, aboie the July level;' as compared with 16.4 per cent, above that level in Ootober. In November, compared with the previous' month, there were increases in tho price of wheat flour, butter, lard, beef, veal, pork, bacon, rice, Eplit peas, harioot beans, nhd 'lentils. Other articles showed no change or a .slight decrease Comparing November prices with thasa prevailing in July, the articles showing the most marked advances were wheateu bread, rye flour, butter, lard, eggs, bacon, rice, split peas, haricot _ beans, and lentils. There were particularly, large increases in the last three of these, which are very important in German housekeeping. The rye bread sold .in November was inferior in quality as compared with previous months. Butter in November had risen by 17.3 per cent, and lard by as much as 53.8 per cent, above July prices. It is reported that recourse is being had to substitutes, the prices of which are accordingly rising very much. The increase in the price of eggs (71.4 per oent. on November oyer July prices) is partly seasonal, but is also in some measure due to the fact that few foreign eggs are being imported into Germany.- In'normal times the home supply forms only a very small part of the home consumption. Potatoes showed no change from July prices in September, but in each of the following months they were 12.5 per cent, above normal prices. Maximum-prices were fixed for this article of food on November 25. The prices so fixed were producers' prices, and- wholesale and retail dealers did not coma within the terms of the decrce.
