SICK AND WOUNDED FUND.

BENEFIT DISPLAY AT PETONE. On Saturday afternoon an ambulance display was held <Jn the Potone Recreation Ground, in conjunction with a fancy dress cricket match between representatives of the Railway Workshops and the Petone Woollen Mills. The proceeds are to be handed over to the Sick and Wounded Fund, and there was a fair attendance. It is estimated that the amount realised will be about £15. A procession, led by the Petone Municipal Band, in which a large banner portraying "The Absent-Minded Beggar" was borne, paraded the Main Street, where crowds of people' thronged the footpaths. The cricketers, in their grotesque costumes, caused much merriment, and the attention of the spectators was mainly focussed upon their antics throughout the day. At the grounds, ambulance drill was undergone by the ladies' section of the Wellington Centre, Wellington South, and Petone Divisions, and later by the male members of. the various divisions, under the direction of District Superintendent Cox, the work being subsequently supervised by Superintendents Andrews (Petone) and Hislop (Wellington Centre), and pronounced as very satisfactory. The spectacle created much interest, as_ squad after squad bore their' suffering' "subjects" on stretchers to the_ ambulance van, after rendering first aid to divers fractures, etc. Tne cricket match was declared to be a draw, to be played off at a future date, the crowd apparently being satisfied with the merriment caused by the players. A ladies' committee, consisting of Mesdames Avison, Pointer, Crowther, and Miss Pointer, attended to the afternoon tea stall; and Messrs. Kyle, Raistrick, and Others of the Petone Division, worked strenuously throughout the day to make the function successful. GIFT TOBACCO FUND.
