SUBMARINE AND LINER
BRITISH DESTROYER INTERVENES

London, March 20. Passengers by the liner Lapland report that a German (submarine attempted to torpedo the vessel in the Irish Sea. A British destroyer fired on tho submarine, but the i nsult is not Jiy.oWli. The Lapland is a vessel of 18,694 tons, built in 1908 for the Soc. Anon, de Nav Beige Americaine by Ilarlaud and \\olf, Ltd., of Belfast. She is a splendid vessel, fitted with all the latest appliances. Her dimensions are: Length. 605.8 ft.; breadth, 70.4ft,.,'depth, 34.4 ft. The Lapland trades between New York and English ports. ANOTHER VESSEL TORPEDOED. ~~ • BUT REACHES PORT. London, March 19. The steamer Hyndford, bound from Bahici Blanca to London, was torpedood in the Channel, but reached Graveßend. STEAMER TORPEDOED. "OREW ESCAPE IN LIFEBOATS. London, March 19. The 6teamer Blue Jacket, 3515 tons, from the La Plata to London, was torpedoed without warning in the Channel. The crew escaped in the lifeboats.
