."from Our Srecial CorresrondenM At the Lower Hutt Police. Court last week, before Messrs. Chapman, Cudby, and Hogarth, J.P.'s, Win. Waters, cabdriver, and Joseph' Nidd, carrier, were ■ charged with caving stolen two sacks of chaff, value 'ls'.Bd., the property of Wm. Deller Farmer, at Silverstream, on March 11, Mr. H. O'Leary appeared for the accused. After hearing the evidence,, the Bench considered - the charge' proved, and the defendants were each fined £2, and 7s. 6d. costs, in default, seven days' imprisonments
At the annual meeting of tie Hutt No-License League,, held at Petone last 'week,' the following officers were elected:—President, Mr. W. M.'P. Lascelles; secretary, Mr. H. Grinstead; treasurer, Mr. F. Lockwood. The executive of last year was re-elected. Last week a Belgian, benefit was held in the Empire Theatre, Petone, the building being crowded. Several military pictures were screened and the following contributed to the programme: Mesdames R. Jones, A. Smith, and Montgomery, Messrs. N. Foster, Leadbeater, Duppy, and Tennyson, Professor Martin, Messrs. Watson, Clauson, Rowe, Maud, Eades, M'Ewan, Poinfrey, Chamberlain, and Borrows.
