BELGIAN RELIEF
BELGIAN PEOPLE TOUCHED BY N.Z. GENEROSITY AND SYMPATHY. The Hon. C. J. Johnston, Consul for Belgium, has received tho following lottor from Count de Lalaing, of the Belgian Legation, London, under date February 5:—"I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of December 17, "B," relating to the sending of moneys collected by you on behalf of tho Belgian Relief Fund. Tho amounts remitted by you up to the date of December 17 amount, as stated by you, to a total of £12,080 sterling. lam gratified to take this opportunity of thanking you most warmly for your efforts, and to congratulate you most sincerely on tho magnificent results obtained by you. To my great regret, I am unable to personally thank the donors of these moneys, which, no doubt, you have already done; but I should be pleased by your finding occasion to let the donors know how much these gifts have touched the' Belgian people, and how grateful these latter ala to the citizens of New Zealand for their numerous signs of sympathy and their great generosity. Be good enough to accept the assurance of my great consideration."
AN ANONYMOUS DONOR.
Yesterday, Mr. Harry Plimmer, of the Fliminer-Hall Patriotic Comedy Co.. was handed a cheque for £50 towards the company's Belgian Fund by a Wellington citizen, who does not desire to reveal his identity. In handing Mr. Plimmer tho cheque the donor said he was proud that a Wellington man was associated with such a bigspirited enterprise as the tour of this company, which is being inaugurated to-day, and he wisliea the company every success in its effort to raise money for the distressed Belgians. The members of the Miramar Golf Club have responded readily to an appeal on behalf of the Belgian Relief Fund. Already a hundred guineas has been subscribed, and the secretary is asking those who have not already contributed to do so as soon as possible, in order that lie may be able to hand over the amount to tho fund. ' The entertainment which the Wellington railwaymen will hold in tho Town Hall on Friday evening, March 26, will be unique. The programme will comprise a realistic assault-at-arms by members of the 4th and sth Reinforcements, under the new system of bayonet fighting, as now being taught .in Trentham campj jiujitsu display by Captain Leopold M'Lag.len, tugs-of-war between teams from the Expeditionary Forces and the New Zealand Railways; patriotic songs by Miss Hina Caldow, and Messrs. Clarkson, Molir, and Hickmott; and patriotic selections by M'Laughlin's Orchestra of 25 performers.
