CHARGE OF MURDER
WITHDRAWN BY THE POLICE. The man Charles Harvey, alias Howard, who has been on remand for some time on a charge of having murdered the Chinaman Wong Way Ching in Wellington on September 12, appeared at the Magistrate's Court again yesterday, when Inspector Hendrey asked leave to withdraw the charge. The ground on which the application was made, ha said, was that there was nothing against the accused with the exception of his own statement or confession. The police had made such inquiries into the confession that they were satisfied no jury could reasonably convict tlio man. The opinion of tlie Crown Law Office was nut before the Magistrate (Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M.). Inspector Hendrey: There are numerous little inaccuracies in the statement. The reason why there have been so many remands was to allow the statements to be verified. Tlio Magistrate: I am of the saroa opinion. iThe charge ought to be withdrawn. No jury would convict him. Inspector Hendrey: That is the opinion the Crown Law Office came to. The charge was accordingly withdrawn.
