The president of the Wellington Den tal Association, Dr. Knox Gilmer, ha: donated forty-two guineas to coimnem orate the opening of the Dental De partment at the Public Hospital. On Thursday afternoon the Hospital Boarc unanimously decided to thank Dr. Gil ffier for his donation. In the course of a reminiscent chat, Captain H. Johnson, who is retiring 'from the post of harbourmaster at the end of the month, stated that he was ii: charge of the Wanaka- at the time when she used to work up and down the coasf with the Taiaroa. He had left Dunedir 'on Saturday, September 10, ISB6, foi ■Lyttelton, and the Taiaroa left Wellington for the same port. When the Wanaka arrived at Lyttelton on tht Sunday Captain Johnson was summoned to the office, and instructions wer< given to him to proceed at once t< iWaipapa Point, where the Taiaroa had '-Ijeen wrecked with loss of life. A divei and his gear wore taken ou board, and the Wanaka left as eoon as possible. When she reached Waipapa Point (neai Kaikoura) it was found that the Taiaroa was liigh and dry, and thoy could dc nothing.
